Design Technology
Design Technology Intent
At Martley CE Primary School, Design and Technology is a forward-thinking, practical subject that empowers children to become resourceful designers and reflective problem-solvers. Our curriculum enables pupils to understand how ideas can be transformed into purposeful products that improve everyday life. Guided by our Christian vision and the values of compassion, creativity, courage, commitment and co-operation, we aim to nurture children who design with both skill and heart.
Design and Technology provides meaningful opportunities for pupils to engage with real-life challenges. Children learn to think about who they are designing for and why, developing compassion as they consider the needs of others. They are encouraged to use their creativity to generate original ideas and explore different solutions, while showing courage when testing, adapting and improving their designs.
Through the design, make and evaluate process, pupils develop commitment, learning that successful outcomes require perseverance, care and attention to detail. Collaborative projects foster co-operation, helping children to share ideas, solve problems together and respect different viewpoints.
Our progressive curriculum ensures pupils gain practical knowledge in areas such as structures, mechanisms, textiles, food and electrical systems, while also developing critical thinking and resilience. They learn that innovation often involves refining ideas and learning from experience.
By the time they leave Martley, we want our pupils to understand that design has the power to serve others and shape the world positively — equipping them with the confidence, empathy and determination to create solutions that matter.
