Music
Music Intent
At Martley CE Primary School, we believe that music is a powerful, inclusive and transformative part of every child’s education. Our music curriculum is designed to inspire a lifelong love of music while nurturing all children through our core values.
We promote Courage by giving every child the confidence to perform, compose and express themselves musically in a safe and supportive environment. Through singing, instrumental work and performance opportunities, pupils learn to take risks, embrace challenges and develop resilience.
Through ensemble playing, group composition and shared performances, we encourage Co-operation, teaching children to listen carefully to others, respect different contributions and work collaboratively to achieve a shared musical outcome.
We foster Commitment by developing discipline, focus and perseverance in learning musical skills. Pupils are encouraged to practise, refine and improve their work, understanding that progress in music comes through dedication and sustained effort.
Creativity lies at the heart of our music curriculum. Children are given regular opportunities to compose, improvise and respond imaginatively to music from a wide range of cultures and genres. We empower pupils to explore their own musical ideas and to value originality and self-expression.
Rooted in our Christian ethos, music at Martley CE Primary School also provides opportunities for reflection and embracing of our ‘God-given talents’.
Through high-quality teaching and meaningful musical experiences, we aim to ensure that every child leaves Martley CE Primary School with the knowledge, skills and confidence to continue their musical journey.
Alongside class music lessons, we work closely with specialist external providers including LP Music Tuition, Severn Arts and Mark Archer, founder of Hill Brook Guitar Studio.

We are proud to have a strong relationship with Bishop Perowne (Church of England College) in Worcester, who support our delivery of instrumental lessons by kindly lending us a range of musical instruments. Currently, our Year 6 pupils are enjoying weekly lessons learning the ukulele.

Martley School Choir
Our Key Stage 2 choir is a real strength of the school, consisting of over forty children who attend weekly after-school sessions. Throughout the year, representatives of our school choir take pride in travelling around the local area to perform at community events. This academic year, our Roving Choir have performed at Martley Memorial Hall for the Christmas Fayre as well as Nora Parsons Day Centre in Wichenford where Reverend Jennifer and the day visitors welcomed the children for their annual outing.
Young Voices
Each year, our pupils have the exciting opportunity to take part in Young Voices, the largest children’s choir concert series in the world. This unforgettable experience brings together thousands of children from schools across the country to perform as part of a massed choir in a major arena. Taking part in Young Voices promotes teamwork, resilience and a shared sense of achievement, while inspiring a lifelong love of singing and music. Performing on such a large stage is a truly memorable experience for our pupils and a highlight of the school year.
