Geography Intent
Geography is essentially about understanding the world we live in. It helps to provoke and provide answers to questions about natural and human aspects of the world. At Martley, children are encouraged to develop a greater understanding and knowledge of the world, as well as their place in it. The Martley geography curriculum enables children to build a knowledge base progressively, by introducing and then revisiting topics regularly.
At Martley, our intent when teaching geography is to instil in children a sense of wonder at the beauty of the world around them and to inspire in them a curiosity and fascination about the world and the people within it. We also aim to promote an interest in, and understanding of, diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments, together with a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes. We believe that it is our duty to help the children of our future to develop an informed concern about the quality of the environment they live in and the potential impact that their lifestyle choices might have on our planet.
Geography Implementation
We teach the geography National Curriculum, supported by a clear knowledge progression map. This ensures that knowledge is built on year by year and sequenced appropriately to maximise learning for all children. It is important that children fully understand the skills and experiences of a geographer and this can be achieved by fully immersing them in all areas of the subject. The local area is fully utilised to achieve desired outcomes, with opportunities for learning outside the classroom embedded in practice. School trips and fieldwork are provided to give first hand experiences, which enhance the children’s understanding of the world within and beyond their locality.
