Science Intent

Science at Martley CE Primary School is proud to have achieved the Primary Science Quality Mark (PSQM) accreditation, recognising the commitment, dedication and hard work that has gone into developing high-quality Science teaching and learning across the school. This award reflects our determination to continually strengthen our science curriculum and provide meaningful scientific experiences for every child.

At Martley CE Primary School, our vision is for all children to be curious, enthusiastic and challenged in their science learning. We aim to inspire pupils to dig deeper, ask questions and experience the awe and wonder of God’s beautiful world through meaningful scientific exploration.

We are committed to ensuring that every child develops secure scientific knowledge, enquiry skills and vocabulary so they can confidently investigate, explain and understand the world around them. Through a carefully sequenced curriculum, pupils build on prior knowledge and develop their understanding across the key areas of biology, chemistry and physics.

Science lessons at Martley are designed to be fun, engaging and hands-on, promoting a love of learning for all. Children are encouraged to explore both inside and outside the classroom, carrying out practical investigations and developing their understanding through observation, questioning and experimentation. Pupils learn to use scientific vocabulary accurately, enabling them to explain their thinking and share their discoveries.

We encourage children to demonstrate courage by asking questions, challenging their ideas and persevering when investigations do not go as expected. Through enquiry and exploration, pupils develop resilience and confidence as young scientists.

Science provides meaningful opportunities for cooperation, as children work together to investigate, share ideas and discuss their observations. We promote compassion and respect by encouraging pupils to listen to one another, value different viewpoints and appreciate the importance of caring for our natural world.

We foster creativity by allowing children to think scientifically, make predictions, solve problems and make connections between their learning and real-life contexts. Pupils develop an understanding of the different types of scientific enquiry, enabling them to ask and answer questions about the world in a thoughtful and structured way.

Through inclusive and inspiring teaching, we aim for every child to leave Martley CE Primary School with a strong foundation in scientific knowledge, curiosity about the world and the confidence to continue exploring and questioning. We want our pupils to recognise the importance of science in everyday life and to feel inspired to care for and understand the diverse and fascinating world that God has created.
